What Retarders for Public Roads

For public roads, the standards are more stringent. Some surveys have shown that a third of speed bumps located on public roads are non-compliant because of their height, their stiffness, or their lack of reporting. To improve safety in your municipality, it is necessary to use facilities that comply with the law and encourage motorists to slow down.

The Berlin cushion is most often a rubber speed bumps. Its purpose is to slow the speed of motorists without disturbing other users. It is narrow enough to allow bikes to pass to the right and buses to pass over without having to cross it, and wide enough to force cars to cross it with at least one wheel. This equipment is so-called because it has been tested for the first time in Berlin, a city that spent almost 70% of its roads in an area limited to 30 km / h.

The Berlin cushion complies with standards relating to traffic on public roads. Composed of rubber, it forces the driver to slow down by cushioning and firm contact. Its height is generally between 60 and 70 millimeters. It supports the passage of all types of vehicles, whether cars, buses, or heavy goods vehicles, while reducing noise pollution.

Berlin Cushions Layout Standards

According to the Highway Code, the introduction of speed cushions is limited to urban areas, the service areas or off-road or highway, and tracks subdivision and parking areas. They must only be installed on a section of track locally limited to 30 km / h.

It is also forbidden to install cushions:

  • On tracks where the traffic is more than 6000 vehicles per day
  • On roads serving rescue centers
  • Less than 200 metersfrom the limits of an agglomeration
  • On tracks with a slope greater than 6%
  • In turnswith a radius of less than 200 meters and at the end of a bend at a distance of less than 40 meters
  • On or in an engineering structure(bridge, tunnel, etc.) or less than 25 meters on either side
  • On roads with more than one lane in each direction
